Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is the standard interface for a high-performance connection between PCs and flat panel displays, digital CRT displays, projectors, and HDTVs. The DVI-D digital cable delivers the high-performance high-bandwidth interface needed for video displays of today, while leaving headroom for the products of tomorrow. These precision-engineered cables are fully compliant with the DVI standard defined by DDWG (Digital Display Working Group). The DVI-D dual link configuration provides enough bandwidth for resolutions up to 2560x1600, and allows high speed digital transmission up to 9.9 Gbps. DVI cables are very popular and have become more exclusive to the computer market.
DVI cables are available in DVI-D Single-Link and Dual-Link formats. These DVI cables send information using a digital information format called TMDS (transition minimized differential signaling). The difference between the two is that the dual-link contains additional twisted pairs that will lower the bit rate and increase the effective bandwidth of the interface. The key to capturing the benefits of the dual link DVI cable is to ensure that your display devices have are set up to handle the dual link features. If the devices are not set up for dual link it is ok. They will not hurt or help your display devices. The single link DVI cables use one TMDS 165 MHz transmitter and are the most commonly used because there are very few display devices on the market that actually utilize the dual link interface.
By now you have come to realize that DVI may be the most confusing video connection standard ever created. The most important factor in choosing a DVI cable is to understand the type of signal you are carrying over your cable. A DVI-D cable will carry an all digital signal so before choosing a DVI cable type look at the manual of your video device.
